The Civil War is the war between Americans and Americans - the South and the North.
The south of America grew and exported cotton. They purchased goods from Europe and the north. Because they grew cotton, so they needed slaves. Most northern states did not allow slaves.
The northern thought that the south would only bought the less expensive goods from Europe. To help the north, the government placed tax on imports, so the goods from Europe would be more expensive than the northern goods. The Southern, however, thought Europeans might lose money, and could not buy a lot of cotton from the south.
In 1860, Abraham Lincoln became president. He was from the north and didn’t support slavery. The southern states began to secede from the United States. They formed a new country. They chose a new president, made their own money, and created their flag.
These two countries began to fight. The most famous battle was the battle of Gettysburg. This battle began on July 1, 1863, and it ended on July 3,1863. It was also the key for the northern to win the civil war. After the battle of Gettysburg, the southern states began to lose. On April 9, 1865, the southern general surrendered. This was the end of the civil war.
After the civil war, Lincoln was shot dead. Americans united once again. They made new laws to end slavery. However, it took another hundred years for black people to have the same rights as the white people’s.
